The <div> tag

<div> is a generic block-level container with no semantic meaning at all. Use it when no semantic tag (section, article, nav, etc.) fits.

Syntax

<div>...</div>

Example

<div class="card">
  <p>Just a container for CSS styling.</p>
</div>

Notes

  • Before reaching for div, check whether a semantic tag fits better: header, nav, main, section, article, aside, footer.
  • div has no effect on accessibility or SEO by itself — it's a pure layout container.
