The tag

marks stress emphasis — a part of text that should be read with a different intonation, changing the meaning of the sentence.

Syntax

emphasized text

Example

I did actually do it (not just plan to).

Notes

 • em is about stress/intonation, strong is about importance/seriousness — different meanings, though both are visually distinct from regular text (italic/bold) by default.

Accessibility

 • Some screen readers change intonation when reading em.
